4 Things You Need To Do Before Shipping Your Vehicle

Posted on: 22 August 2018

If you are moving a great distance, one of the best ways to get your vehicle to your new destination is by shipping your car. When you ship your car, you don't have to deal with the laborious process of driving your vehicle across the country on your own. Before you just drop your vehicle off with the car shipping company, you are going to want to spend some time preparing your vehicle for the shipping process.

1. Take Out Your Personal Belongs

Your car is not another storage container. Your vehicle should not be packed full of items. You actually want your vehicle to be as clean as possible. That means that you need to clean all personal items out of your car in order to have enough time to pack up and put the items in your moving truck or ship them to your destination.

You want to move all items that are not related to your vehicle. It is okay to leave the spare tire, jumper cables, and tire wrench in your car. However, you want to remove the car seat, organizers, water bottles, clothing, and other assorted items that you usually keep in your vehicle. Most car moving companies will not ensure the personal items inside of your vehicle. You also don't want to have a lot of items moving around in your vehicle.

2. Secure any Loose Items

Next, you are going to want to secure any loose items in your vehicle. Make sure that the spare wheel is sitting in the wheel cavity in the trunk of your car. If you have any supplies in the trunk of your car, make sure that you box it up and use bungee cords to keep everything in place. Get rid of any liquid items, even if they are related to your vehicle, such as windshield washer fluid and antifreeze. You can replace these items when you get to your new destination.

You don't want to have things rumbling around in your vehicle and/or spilling around your vehicle.

3. Turn off the Car Alarm

Your vehicle is going to go through a lot of movement. You don't want the car alarm to go off when your vehicle is driving down the road on the back of a semi-truck or a moving van. This is annoying for the driver and could result in your vehicle arriving with a drained out battery.

Disable the car alarm before you drop your vehicle off for shipping. If you do not know how to turn off the car alarm on your own, make an appointment with your local dealership and arrange to have the car alarm turned off before you drop the car off.

4. Clean Your Vehicle

Finally, you are going to want to make sure that you clean your vehicle as well. Vacuum your vehicle inside; you don't want to leave any food or scraps in your vehicle that could start smelling bad during the shipping process. You also want to have a clean vehicle when you get to your destination.

Before you ship your vehicle, take all of your personal belongings out of the vehicle and pack them up with your other household belongings. Make an appointment with the dealership to disable your car alarm. Secure any loose items in your vehicle and clean your vehicle inside and out before you drop it off with the car shipping company.
